TREW: Assisting the Community
Northwest Melbourne Horses
The plight of a group of horses in Melbourne's northwestern suburbs, was brought to TREW’s attention late last year. The small group of horses was found in a large paddock full of Galina, Box Thorn and Prickly Pears. The initial assessment found that the three horses in question are all aged Thoroughbreds, 21, 19 and 18 respectively, with the two bays more than likely siblings due to their similarities and brands. All three horses are friendly and seemed to be in good spirits.
While there was practically nothing to eat on the ground, none of the horses appear to have tried to escape, a feat which would have been easy given that the fences are very poor comprising of a knee high single strand of wire in some places.
During a routine check up TREW President Leigh met the owner of the three horses.
It turned out that she had only owned the three Thoroughbreds for a couple of weeks, taking them on when they were going to be sent to the knackery.
The owner was given advice about horse care which she was very willing to take on board. She genuinely wanted to do the right thing by these horses and offer them the retirement that they deserved.
All of us at TREW feel it is very worthwhile taking the time to educate owners about basic care and feeding of their equine pets.
The horses in this case are looking very good. They have all put on condition and have had their feet done. Hay is provided ad lib in the paddock and all the horses have had quality rugs fitted.
Thank you to Leigh for spending time with the owner and providing her with the knowledge she needed, and to the horses owner for working hard to bring these horses back to good health and for providing them with a caring retirement that all old horses deserve.
