TREW: Assisting the Community
Samantha, Blacky and Poppy
The owner of Poppy, Samantha and Blacky contacted TREW for assistance. Samantha, a flaxen miniature pony mare and Blacky, an black aged Shetland were not well and required a little help. The owner is a wildlife rescue volunteer and took on the two ponies when their former owner abandoned them where they were being agisted, as well as Poppy, an approximately 12hh mare, to save them from going to the doggers.
In addition to the three equines there was a sheep.
Believe it or not this is where the issue started. The sheep was rehomed to a local farmer and in exchange the famer supplied the pony’s owner some unprocessed oats and barley (sheep food). Having limited experience herself, the owner started to feed this to all three ponies. It didn't take long before things headed south.
We (TREW Committee members Leigh and Jessie) arrived to find two little ponies not feeling quite like themselves. After a short discussion the source of the problem was discovered. A good dose of cod liver oil and a bit of a walk around showed little improvement. It was now a waiting game.
The next day when Leigh returned to check up on the ponies, things had certainly improved. Blacky and Samantha were back to their usual playful selves and looking much better. Their owner has been given some much needed dietary advice and is very grateful for our assistance. While there all three were treated to a worming and a quick groom.
The ponies’ owner has decided that it would be best if Poppy and Samantha were rehomed to more suitable surroundings. Blacky, the older Shetland will be staying with the current owner as it is her wish that they spend his last years together.
Poppy is a riding pony type, 6-7 years of age and is broken to saddle. She is a forward moving little mare. What makes her a little different from most riding ponies is the lack of one eye. This does not hinder her as the loss of the eye happened when she was a young foal. Poppy was rehomed to a TREW member and she went to a lovely home.
Samantha is a miniature pony mare who is aged around 5yrs. She is a sweet little thing who also found a home with one of TREW’s pony loving members.
