TREW: Assisting the Community

Mummy

TREW received a call from a lady who had taken on an old broodmare and her last foal to keep them from going to slaughter. The aged mare has seemingly never been handled and she does not show much interest in people at all. Her paddock companions, an Arab and Mummy's last foal, now a strapping young gelding named Shadow, on the other hand love people and the attention offered to them.

Living in horsey heaven on a picturesque property to the West of Melbourne in a large paddock with lots of grass has aided this mare in not having to rely on humans for food. But, being unable to handle the mare means her owner is unable to safely handle her for things like the vet, dentist and the farrier without sedating her.


To begin with, a smaller yard has been built in the paddock to provide a safe, enclosed working area (Have you tried to get close to a horse that doesn't want to know you in a 20 acre paddock? It's a long walk!) Mummy is being fed in the yard and her owner spends time just being around her, giving attention to the other horses who are more than happy to receive it and getting the mare used to people being around but with no intention of forcing her to do anything. Adverse weather conditions have hindered more intensive work being done with the mare yet.


Mummy certainly landed on her feet when this property became her home. Stay tuned for more updates on this lovely mare.
